Is GPS About to Be Broken?

By Keir Thomas, PCWorld

Could you live without your satellite navigation system?
If we're to believe a new pressure group called Coalition to Save our GPS, it won't be long until we find out. The group consisting of GPS manufacturers, airline trade organizations, and other concerned parties, claims that a 4G LTE service is on the brink of breaking Global Positioning Systems for the population at large, including emergency responders such as ambulances and police.
The problem relates to the frequencies a startup called LightSquared intends to use for its 4G LTE phone service. Earlier this year the Federal Communications Commission approved LightSquared's plans to operate in the frequency range of 1525 to 1559MHz. GPS operates in the neighboring 1559-1610MHz band and--depending on who you speak to--it's all a little too close for comfort, not least because cell phone signals from towers are an order of magnitude stronger than GPS signals.
A few weeks ago GPS device manufacturer Garmin set up an experimental transmitter broadcasting on LightSquared's proposed frequencies. It caused havoc for several Garmin products. An aviation device lost its GPS fix at just under 14 miles away from the transmitter and was totally jammed five and a half miles away. One of Garmin's most popular consumer devices lost its fix just over half a mile away.
Scary. The coalition points out that LightSquared plans to built up to 40,000 ground stations, potentially creating an equivalent number of GPS dead spots miles in diameter.

BARC Holiday Party

BARC will have its Annual Holiday Party on Saturday December 4 at 6 PM at the Red Cross Chapter House in Hyannis.

The chapter is fixing the front door step. Everyone needs to enter through the wheelchair access ramp on the RIGHT side of the chapter

Barb Leiden is coordinating the food for the Pot Luck Dinner. All are asked to contact her with ideas for dishes to bring. We already have two main course dishes ID'd and one appetizer so factor that into your ideas. As always, utensils, drinks, etc. are needed so let us know if that will be your contribution (in case cooking isn't your thing.) We're also looking for ideas for activities to have at the party this year (a raffle, an auction, a sing-a-long, etc.) so email Rob at k1ui@arrl.net with any suggestions. Let's make this one the best ever!

Repeater Status

It's back up!

We replaced the antenna again today, taking down the Bozak that we put up yesterday. The VSWR was 10:1 ! The UHF to N adapter seams to be the major culprit with this problem, it was tested on the ground after it was taken down and had a good VSWR, and about 3:1 with the adapter. A new X50NA was reinstalled, this antenna has a N connector already on it.

We are still looking into the random noise problem.

BARC Opposed to H-4475

BARC is oppose passage of H-4475 unless it is amended to protect amateur radio, for example, so that the passage in Chapter 90, Section 13 which exempts Citizen Band radio also include an exemption for amateur radio operators. Our concerned that the law might be interpreted so as to make mobile amateur radio operations illegal. An exemption for FCC-licensed amateurs in the law would allow us to continue training for & providing emergency & public service communications to our communities. Amateur radio operators perform many public service activities ranging from mobile emergency reporting to the National Weather Service and emergency management agencies during storms to support of charity road races and we couldn't do that if amateur radio operators weren't allowed to communicate while on the road.

We request that H-4475 not be passed unless amended as requested.

Please contact your senator and inform them of your view on passage of this bill.
