The Cape and Islands Weather Net
The Cape and Islands Weather Net takes place at 6:00 local time, Monday through Saturday, on the BARC, 146.955 repeater.
The Net also utilizes the N1YHR-147.375 repeater, and the FARA-146.655 repeater, to collect off-Cape stations, and to more fully utilize the Net Control Stations.
The use of several repeaters assures communications in the event of a problem accessing one of the repeaters.
The purpose of the net is to gather weather information, especially rainfall amounts, and deliver this information, via a daily email, to the National Weather Service Hydrological Office, the Mass. Dept of Conservation and Recreation (Water Resources), and to any other interested parties.
The net collects information from:
- Eastham
- Waquoit
- Centerville
- W. Tisbury
- E. Falmouth
- Acushnet
- Fairhaven
- Wellfleet
- S. Sagamore
- Vineyard Haven
- S. Yarmouth
- S Hyannis
- And when conditions are favorable Milford, Ct.
The Cape and Islands Weather Net is a directed net that utilizes a role call, and several net control stations. Weather is transmitted in a standard format, to make recording it easier. After the weather data has been collected, a short session is devoted to a weather report and information from the National Weather Service concerning the days weather outlook.
Elaborate equipment is not a requisite to providing some useful weather information to the Net. A properly placed thermometer, an inexpensive rain gauge, and a look at the sky in the morning are the basics. A barometer and a high/low thermometer are good but not necessary.
The most important public service provided by the Net is providing, accurate daily rainfall totals, for the previous 24 hours at Net time (0600). Also, the monthly rainfall totals, which encompass the rainfall in the gauge on the first morning of the month, and the last morning of the month.
The net normally closes at about 6:20 a.m. An informal rag chew usually follows the Net.
If you would like any more information email any one of the Net members. Email address information is available on the QRZ website.
