D.O.D. Continues to Target 440 Repeaters
Posted by: N1ZPO on Tuesday, September 15, 2009 - 04:32 PM

The Department of Defense has continued it's effective shut down of 440MHz repeaters in southeastern Massachusetts. They are citing interference to the PAVE PAWS installation located on Cape Cod. This is the second round of testing the DOD has done that resulted in Amateur repeaters going off the air.

The DOD has not come out and said that 440MHz repeaters are not allowed in our area, but their history over the past two years says otherwise. It is still legal to operate a 440MHz repeater at 50w PEP, however history is proving you will not be doing so for long. After the first round tests the ARRL suggested that 440MHz repeaters reduce power to help mitigate any further interference. One such repeater on the Cape did just that. The K1ISS 447.325MHz repeater in N. Eastham reduced their power to 4.5w PEP. But on August 13 they received a letter that informed them they needed to reduce there power by an additional 15dB!

BARC was in the process of putting the club 440MHz repeater back into service when this notice was sent to K1ISS. After discussion at the September 14 2009 club meeting a decision to stop all 440MHz repeater related operations and liquidate the existing club equipment was made. The club's repeater is higher, closer and running more power, so there is no point in continuing to spend club funds on what we believe has no chance of not being shut down.

New Website in Development
Posted by: Admin on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 02:54 PM

barnstabeARC.org will be undergoing a big change in the beginning of 2010!
The entire website you see now is going to be replace.

There are several technical reasons for this change, but the overall reason is to offer users a better experience. Since the site was developed in 2004 it has had a lot of changes made to it's core code. The changes make upgrading more and more difficult. The new site will start fresh and support current web standards.

You will be able to do everything they do now. Actually you will be able to do more. The look will be different but the change is for the better. The user interface is very easy to use.

Some of the notable changes will be:

  • User editable personal information that will interact with the roster
  • Ability to add "page" content with ease
  • No HTML knowledge needed
  • WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor
  • Better e-mail support

Development is already underway on a testing server and I will keep you posted!
Just a interesting note to the scope of the project this website has over 6,600 files, this includes NONE of the site content, that is all in a data base.
