Cookout and Fox Hunt - August 22
Posted by: Admin on Monday, August 02, 2010 - 06:28 PM

Come join fellow Hams for a cookout and Fox Hunt on August 22 at Woodsong Farm in Brewster. The events are open to any amateur that would like to participate. For anyone that is reading this and asking what Fox hunting and Amateur radio have in common let me explain. Fox hunting is a term used to describe ARDF, Amateur Radio Direction Finding. Basically we will be hunting down a hidden transmitter located in the woods of Nickerson State Park.

The Fox hunt and cookout are at different times on Sunday, if you cant make each or don't want to participate in the hunt please join us for the cookout later on in the afternoon

The cookout will have hamburgers and hot dogs grilled to order, all participants are encouraged to bring a small item to go along with the them. Please contact Barbara Leiden (may be e-mailed at, secretary "at" barnstablearc.org) to arrange you item.

The events are free to all BARC Members and family. If you would like to joint us and are not a BARC member that is not a problem, you have two options;
1.) Bring a pre arranged food item approved by Barbara Leiden (may be e-mailed at, secretary "at" barnstablearc.org)
2.) Pay $5.00 cash or check to BARC at event (we will not have change, so please bring exact amount)

12:30 Gather for the Hunt (please be on time)
16:00 End of Fox Hunt / Start of Cookout

Talk In - 146.955 Repeater

Items to Bring:

  • Direction finding antenna(s) (more info on antennas in the forum)
  • 2m HT with S meter
  • Attenuator(s) if you have them
  • Appropriate clothing, long pants if it's not super hot, you will be in the woods.
  • Orienteering compass
  • USGS Map or Orienteering map of Nickerson State Park.

As far as the compass goes, you are looking for one that will allow you to orientate you map and take bearings. One like this is what you are looking for. The round flip top military style are a lot more frustrating to use.

Rules of the hunt:
There are some.. All participants going on the hunt must check in and be recorded in the log book at Woodsong Farm. This is the only way we have to know who is on the hunt. When you find the Fox it will have numbered cards with it for you to take. The cards are sequentially numbered. The first person to find the fox will get the #1 card, second person the #2 card and so on. If the cards have instructions on them FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS.

The only restriction is that this is an on foot hunt, no vehicles.. Other than that any equipment is usable.

Directions to Woodsong Farm or you can look at the map

For more information on Fox Hunting search "ARDF Fox Hunting" on Google or YouTube.

BARC Opposed to H-4475
Posted by: Admin on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 - 06:58 AM
BARC is oppose passage of H-4475 unless it is amended to protect amateur radio, for example, so that the passage in Chapter 90, Section 13 which exempts Citizen Band radio also include an exemption for amateur radio operators. Our concerned that the law might be interpreted so as to make mobile amateur radio operations illegal. An exemption for FCC-licensed amateurs in the law would allow us to continue training for & providing emergency & public service communications to our communities. Amateur radio operators perform many public service activities ranging from mobile emergency reporting to the National Weather Service and emergency management agencies during storms to support of charity road races and we couldn't do that if amateur radio operators weren't allowed to communicate while on the road.

We request that H-4475 not be passed unless amended as requested.

Please contact your senator and inform them of your view on passage of this bill.

New Website in Development
Posted by: Admin on Saturday, August 29, 2009 - 02:54 PM

barnstabeARC.org will be undergoing a big change in the beginning of 2010!
The entire website you see now is going to be replace.

There are several technical reasons for this change, but the overall reason is to offer users a better experience. Since the site was developed in 2004 it has had a lot of changes made to it's core code. The changes make upgrading more and more difficult. The new site will start fresh and support current web standards.

You will be able to do everything they do now. Actually you will be able to do more. The look will be different but the change is for the better. The user interface is very easy to use.

Some of the notable changes will be:

  • User editable personal information that will interact with the roster
  • Ability to add "page" content with ease
  • No HTML knowledge needed
  • WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) HTML editor
  • Better e-mail support

Development is already underway on a testing server and I will keep you posted!
Just a interesting note to the scope of the project this website has over 6,600 files, this includes NONE of the site content, that is all in a data base.
