Radio Scouting

radio scouting

Radio Scouting is the intersection of Scouting and amateur radio. It introduces Scouts to the fun, technology, and magic of amateur radio, offering a unique blend of hands-on learning and real-world application. Through a partnership with the Cape Cod & Islands Council, Boy Scouts of America, the Barnstable Amateur Radio Club (BARC) helps bring this exciting world to life for local and visiting Scouts.

BARC has built and maintains "Station W1MA"  a collaborative amateur radio station at Camp Greenough in Yarmouth, MA. This station is a dynamic educational resource, allowing Scouts to engage directly with radio communications through hands-on operation and demonstrations of modern and old school technologies.

Unlike cellular phones and internet-based communication, two-way radio communications offer reliable, infrastructure-independent operation. This is especially valuable in emergency situations and remote environments where cell service may be unavailable. Learning to use radios teaches Scouts how to communicate effectively under various conditions, building self-reliance, confidence, and teamwork.

BARC offers introductory classes aimed at Scout troops, designed to help them understand how two-way radio communications can be effectively used during camping outings, hikes, and other activities in remote areas. These sessions emphasize practical, real-world applications that enhance safety, coordination, and adventure.  Ideally, we would like you to get an amateur radio licence, but we are happy to review all the options your troop may utilize.  When you decide to get your FCC-issued amateur radio licence, we will also be happy to assist and administer that exam.  :)

In addition to hands-on radio operation, Radio Scouting emphasizes STEM education, including:

  • Electronics theory and circuitry

  • Electrical and RF (radio frequency) engineering concepts

  • Coding and digital communications

  • Antenna theory and signal propagation

Scouts can also participate in Merit Badge classes focused on Radio, Electricity, Electronics, and Digital Technology, which allow them to earn badges while developing valuable technical and problem-solving skills.

Whether contacting stations across the globe during Jamboree on the Air (JOTA), building their own antennas, or learning the science behind signal propagation, Scouts experience firsthand the power of communication and exploration through amateur radio.
